Overall, a decent game with both sides having good spells in both offense and defence. Armagh started well but Dungannon gradually improved and were the better side at the end of the eighty minutes.
Dungannon kicked off but Armagh soon took control using the advantage of early penalties to gain primary possession and drive over hooker Finn Vennard on ten minutes. Vennard then scored a second try on twenty-five minutes after some constructive Armagh attacking. Fly half Watterson converted both tries.
Despite some good defensive work by Peter Nelson and Aaron Nelson Armagh winger Cunningham sneaked in very neatly for a try on thirty minutes. Watterson again converted. Half time score 0 – 21
Dungannon’s Faithful were treated to some uplifting attacks through Ben McCaughey and James Girvan. Both sides showed stout defence close to their try line and ball retention by the attacking teams would have pleased coaches and supporters alike.
The second half started well for Dungannon with a Peter Nelson inspired attack ably driven on by James McCammon and Cameron Steenson. This resulted in an Aaron Nelson try three minutes into the half. Ben McCaughey floated over a beautiful conversion. Leaving the score 7 – 21
Unfortunately, Aaron had to leave the field soon after with an injury sustained as Armagh launched another attacking phase. The game ebbed and flowed with both packs testing their opponents defensive qualities. As the game progressed Dungannon were showing more structure to their attacks; with Alfie Lewis, James Grivan and James McMahon proving to be effective. Some destructive work by Leyburn and the returning Todd won Dungannon a penalty that gave good field position. Armagh infringed again and from the resultant penalty John Carroll bulled over after sixty-six minutes. Score 21 – 12
Both sides again tested their opponents but despite Dungannon getting slightly the better of the latter stages there was no further score.
A competitive game played in good conditions with both side benefitting from the outing bearing in mind the AIL starts in two weeks’ time. Both teams may be frustrated that they did not get more points but overall a fair result and good entertainment.
