Dungannon showed clear intent of playing an attacking game with a try after 5 minutes at a wet Thomas Mellon Park on Saturday. A midfield scrum followed by a fine penetrating break by Mark Faloon brought play deep into the home twenty two. An overlap was created from the ensuing ruck with Andrew McGregor scoring an unconverted try.
Dungannon continued to press but to no avail as the steady rain made handling difficult for both sides. A rather harsh yellow card for Matthew Montgomery for a high tackle gave Omagh a decided advantage allowing them to dominate both territory and possession for the first time.
After good work by their forwards, Omagh got their opening try on the half hour on their first visit to the Dungannon line. This was converted and the home side finished the first half the stronger side leading by 7-5.
Just like the early period of the first half Dungannon dominated the opening period of the second. An excellent driving maul from a lineout 30 metres out was brought down and an Omagh player given a yellow card for his efforts. Following the penalty, James Gamble was driven over for a try converted by Jordan McIlwaine.
The visitors were now in control but careless penalties undid the good work at times although the home pack proved adept at counter rucking. Neither side gained anything from the regular bouts of aerial tennis.
On the hour, good work by the Dungannon pack from inside the home half followed by a very determined run by James McMahon was finished off by David Todd at the posts. The conversion made it 7-19.
Omagh continued to be competitive and were awarded a penalty after Andrew McGregor’s attempted intercept was deemed worthy of a yellow card. Their continued pressure brought them an unconverted try in the corner leaving the final score 12-19 in favour of the visitors.
The steady rain throughout did spoil the game as a spectacle but credit to both sides for their efforts in the conditions. Dungannon with two wins out of two in
the Ulster Premiership League face newly promoted Instonians next Friday night at Stevenson Park.
